New Patient Lifts
UTMB hospital units and clinics received 15 patient lifts as the first step in implementing a new program focusing on patient and staff safety. Nurses and direct patient-care providers often must transfer a patient from a chair to a bed, from a toilet to a chair, lift a patient in bed and even make a bed with a patient in it. As a result, health care workers are seven times more likely than other professionals to have a musculoskeletal disorder due to overexertion during patient handling.

Female volunteers for metabolism study
Researchers in the division of endocrinology are recruiting for a study investigating muscle fat metabolism in women. You may be eligible if you are between 20 and 45 years old or older than 65, your BMI is between 25 and 35, you are not pregnant or lactating,  you don’t have any acute or chronic illnesses and you are not taking any medication to control blood sugar or lipid levels. Successful participants will be reimbursed for time and travel. For more information, contact Demidmaa Tuvdendorj at 409-772-1962.

Volunteers for activity study
Researchers are seeking healthy adults to participate in a study comparing measurements of sleep and activity levels in commercially available activity monitors. Participants will wear several monitors for one week as they go about their normal daily activity and while they sleep. Anyone in good health and over 18 qualifies for the study. Volunteers will receive monetary compensation for their participation and receive feedback about their sleep and physical activity levels.
