Ball High School is seeking volunteers for their “Tutor-a-Tor” Mentoring program. The school has partnered with UTMB in addition to the Galveston Chamber of Commerce and Texas A & M University, to mentor students on a weekly basis.  This year the program will facilitate the academic needs of more than one hundred and fifty at risk students.

Ball High School is seeking individuals willing to spend up to an hour a week mentoring a student. The requirement is that the mentor meets with the same student for at least 30 minutes to an hour a week; for a full semester.

This initiative is aimed at assisting disadvantaged students who are at risk of not graduating, passing the state test or any subject matter. It’s amazing how a little love, understanding, consideration, concern and friendship can change the life of a child.  Research has shown students who are mentored have higher attendance records and stronger academic performance. They respond more positively to their teachers and are more likely to pursue higher education.

You can make a big difference in the life of a child by volunteering in the “Tutor-a-Tor” program. Help one student succeed and have a greater feeling of self-worth. If you can share your academic talents with a student by mentoring, or otherwise volunteering at Ball High School, please stop by at 4115 Avenue O in Galveston, during the week or contact Vivian Hernandez, Mentoring Program Coordinator at 409-692-6232, vivianhernandez@gisd.org, or Andressa Leslie, Mentoring Support Facilitator at 409-766-5896, andressaleslie@gisd.org for additional information.
