Dr. Muhammad Mujtaba, medical director for UTMB’s Kidney and Pancreas Transplant Program, was selected as a Fellow of the American Society of Transplantation. The FAST designation recognizes American Society of Transplantation members who have demonstrated both an exceptional commitment to the field of transplantation and outstanding service to the AST. Mujtaba was inducted in Philadelphia during the American Transplant Congress meeting on May 4.


Angela Colantonio from the University of Toronto won the Robert L. Moody Prize for From left are Dr. David L. Callender, president of UTMB; Colantonio; Dr. Brent Masel, president and medical director of The Transitional Learning Center in Galveston; and Elizabeth Protas, vice president and dean of the School of Health Professions.Distinguished Initiatives in Brain Injury Research and Rehabilitation. Colantonio leads a broad, internationally recognized program of research on acquired brain injury, focusing on how ABI impacts the lives of people most vulnerable to health service inequities, such as the homeless, those in prison and older adults.

The Moody Prize is presented annually by UTMB's Division of Rehabilitation Sciences in the School of Health Professions and The Transitional Learning Center of Galveston. The annual award consists of a $10,000 honorarium from UTMB, a citation and an inscribed statue.


Belinda Escamilla, administrative director for Radiology Clinical Operations, will receive the Award for Excellence from the Association for Medical Imaging Management. This award recognizes medical imaging professionals who have made a difference through exceptional innovation, leadership, administrative capabilities and sharing of expertise and experience. Escamilla is one of five AHRA members to be honored this year and will be presented with an award at the AHRA Annual Meeting and Exposition in July.


Congratulations to the winners of the Dr. and Mrs. Seymour Fisher Academic Excellence Awards in Neuroscience. The awards are given to the best paper prepared and submitted by a medical or graduate student on any topic relevant to neuroscience.

On May 16, UTMB orthopaedic and sports medicine physicians, in partnership with Friendswood ISD, completed From left to right, UTMB orthopedic sports medicine division faculty: Nicholas Maassen, Brian Smith, Ronald Lindsey (chairman) and Kenneth Brookspre-participation physicals for 527 students (grades 7-12). The event was held at Friendswood High School’s Walter Wilson Field House for students who plan to participate in FISD athletics, including band, dance, cheer and more, at the junior high or high school level for the 2015-2016 school year.
