If you've noticed that you have trouble following a conversation in a noisy environment, or if you feel like your hearing isn't as sharp as it used to be, you could benefit from a hearing screening.

As part of Better Hearing and Speech Month, UTMB's Center for Audiology and Speech Pathology is providing free hearing screenings for employees.

Hearing loss currently affects more than 36 million Americans. Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired people are younger than 65.

Hearing screenings take about five minutes and are available as follows:

May 21 and 28
11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
UHC Audiology/Speech Clinic, 7th floor

For an appointment, call 409-772-2711 or email parchie@utmb.edu.

Please note: There is a difference between a hearing screening and a hearing evaluation.

A hearing screening is usually a preliminary step in which an individual's hearing is checked to see if further evaluation is required to determine if hearing loss is present. Those who pass hearing screenings are presumed to have no hearing loss. Those who fail are in need of a more detailed hearing evaluation.

A hearing evaluation is an in-depth assessment that will determine the nature and degree of the hearing loss and the best treatment options. If you need an evaluation, information on insurance coverages and how to schedule an appointment will be explained.
