The Moody Medical Library was awarded a Portal to Texas History Rescuing Texas History 2026 grant from the University of North Texas to digitize three registers containing the signatures of the students and graduates of the Texas Medical College and Hospital, the UTMB School of Medicine, and the UTMB School of Pharmacy from 1873 through 1962. The registers are used often by genealogical researchers to confirm graduation or enrollment of a family member, and they provide a more personal experience as the item was touched by generations of doctors.
The registers represent the earliest students of medicine and pharmacy in Texas, including:
- Marie Delalondre, School of Medicine class of 1897
--First female medical student in Texas
- Minnie Fisher Cunningham, School of Pharmacy class of 1901
--Suffragist and politician
- Héctor García, School of Medicine class of 1940
--Civil rights activist
- Denton Cooley, School of Medicine
--Renowned heart surgeon
- Herman Barnett, School of Medicine class of 1953
--First Black medical school graduate in Texas
The registers are available to view in person in the Truman G. Blocker, Jr. History of Medicine Collections and University Archives through the end of 2026. They will be unavailable in 2027 for the duration of the digitization. After digitization, in early 2028, they will be available online on the Portal to Texas History.
