Communications from Dr. Jochen Reiser, president of The University of Texas Medical Branch and CEO of the UTMB Health System, had been teasing it for weeks. Planning had been going on for months. But the idea had taken hold within UTMB leadership well before all of that.

Amid a hail of blue and orange beach balls being tossed from the balcony and swatted around by the crowd, Reiser announced a refreshed brand identity—including a new logo and tagline—that reflects both the organization’s deep roots and forward-looking mission.

Central to the new logo is a shield inspired by Old Red, the historic Ashbel Smith Building, symbolizing strength, tradition, and the stalwart presence of UTMB in the community and the state. The modern typeface and The University of Texas System's orange-and-blue color palette visually tie UTMB to a broader legacy of excellence and help increase trust in the overall brand.

The new tagline—Where Purpose Meets Passion—speaks to the energy and commitment that flow through the institution’s hospitals, labs, and classrooms at UTMB; the curiosity that fuels innovation and discovery; and the compassion that defines every patient interaction.

“The refreshed brand is a reflection of the compassion and professionalism of our dedicated clinical care team, our researchers, our educators, and our support staff that inspire me every day—and to the great potential that we see in our students who will help UTMB lead the way in patient care and medical advancements well into the future,” Reiser says.

More than just cosmetic, the brand refresh is a re-affirmation that every role, every breakthrough, and every act of care contributes to a shared mission of advancing medicine and improving lives.

“The new brand helps us tell a clearer, stronger story about who we are and where we’re headed,” Reiser says. “It reaffirms our commitment to the patients we serve, the students we educate, the faculty and staff who drive our work forward, and the communities—near and far—that rely on us. It is both a symbol of our past and a beacon for our future.”

Q: When did you first start thinking about a refreshed brand, and what was the impetus?

A: The idea began as we took a hard look at how much UTMB had evolved and how much more we were poised to do. Our mission had expanded to include our fourth pillar Innovation, our research enterprise had grown, our clinical programs had advanced, and our global engagement had accelerated.

We realized that while our foundation was strong, our brand needed to more clearly reflect who we are today and where we are going. The rebrand was driven by a desire for alignment—between strategy and storytelling, impact and identity—so that our external image fully matched the reality of the work and aspirations of UTMB.

Q: What is your vision for UTMB—and how is that reflected in the rebrand, new logo, tagline, etc.?

A: My vision for UTMB is to be a world-leading public academic health institution that seamlessly integrates clinical care, education, research, and innovation to improve lives locally and globally. UTMB has always carried an extraordinary legacy, but we are now operating in a moment that demands clarity, confidence, and ambition.

The refreshed brand reflects that evolution. It honors our nearly 135-year history while signaling where we are going next: advancing brain health and the brain economy through the Moody Brain Health Institute, accelerating gene and cell therapies, leading in healthy aging and longevity, transforming cardiovascular care through the Sealy Heart & Vascular Institute, educating an exceptional health care workforce of the future, and delivering cutting-edge medicine that meets the needs of a rapidly changing world.

Our new logo and visual identity are grounded in strength, resilience, and credibility—qualities that define UTMB—while the tagline, Where Purpose Meets Passion, captures the deeper truth of who we are. Every breakthrough, every patient interaction, every discovery at UTMB is driven by purpose and powered by passion. This brand makes that visible.

Q: What message is the refreshed brand intended to communicate to UTMB staff?

A: To our faculty and staff, the message is simple but powerful: You matter, your work matters, and you are part of something extraordinary.

This brand reflects the people who show up every day with expertise, compassion, and commitment. It reinforces pride in who we are, alignment around our shared mission, and confidence in where we are headed. I want our teams to see themselves in this brand, to feel empowered, valued, and connected to UTMB’s future.

Q: What message is the refreshed brand intended to communicate to the people and communities UTMB serves?

A: For our patients and communities, the refreshed brand says “UTMB is here for you—today and for the future.”

It signals trust, excellence, and access to world-class care close to home. Whether someone is seeking advanced specialty care, innovative gene therapy, support for healthy aging, or leading-edge brain health research, this brand reassures them that UTMB is a place where science, compassion, and humanity come together for their benefit.

Q: What excites you most about the refreshed brand?

A: What excites me most is that this brand is not just about design, it’s about direction. It gives us a shared language, a shared identity, and a shared sense of momentum. It helps us tell our story with clarity and confidence, whether we’re speaking to coworkers, a patient, a policymaker, a researcher, or a global partner. Most importantly, it reinforces why we do what we do every day: improve lives through purpose-driven, passion-fueled work.
