At its deepest level, the work we do at The University of Texas Medical Branch is about one timeless truth: people need one another.
Behind every class lecture, every late-night experiment in the lab, every clinical breakthrough, and every expansion of our campuses is a shared commitment to something larger than ourselves. We work, we discover, we educate, we build, so that when someone steps into a UTMB hospital, clinic, emergency room, or classroom, they are not only met with expertise but with compassion. With understanding. With hope.
Today, UTMB is home to more than 16,000 individuals across four campuses, six hospitals, numerous clinics, five health sciences schools, seven institutes for advanced study, and a global network of partnerships. Our research enterprise includes one of only two national laboratories dedicated to the safe study of infectious threats to human health. The scale is remarkable, but the heart of UTMB remains profoundly human.
At the center of all this innovation and progress is a simple universal impulse: to seek help when we hurt and to offer help when others are in need.
UTMB Magazine is a celebration of that impulse. Through every story, every photograph, and every perspective, this publication will shine a light on the people who care, who teach, who discover, and who imagine a healthier future for us all.
In this inaugural issue, you’ll meet a young boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy whose life may be transformed by groundbreaking gene therapy. You’ll see how UTMB researchers are pioneering new approaches to strengthen brain health and combat dementia. You’ll get to share in the excitement of Match Day, the joy of a little girl who regains her ability to hear, the thrill of being on the cutting edge of discovery and much, much more.
And these are just the first pages of a much larger story, one being written everyday across our campuses and communities.
As you read, I hope you enjoy the discoveries, the achievements, and the remarkable work captured here. But more than anything, I hope you feel the spirit of UTMB reflected back at you: the belief that every person matters, every moment of care has meaning, and every small spark of curiosity can ignite a brighter tomorrow.
Every day at UTMB, lives are changed, innovations are born, and the future of health takes shape. UTMB Magazine brings those stories directly to you—stories of hope, possibility, and connection.
