Learning Objectives
Students will better understand how to communicate based on the needs of patients and patients families. Students will learn to communicate more thoughtfully, respectfully and clearly. Students will learn to better express empathy, better deal with patient resistance and non-adherence and better empower patients to make changes for themselves. There will be four main components of the course. 1) self-directed study and reading the book "Motivational Interviewing" and supplementary materials 2) small-group discussion of reading and role-playing scenarios to implement what is being learned 3) faculty contact time 4) final written essay entailing what was learned and how it will be useful in our careers

Describe the qualifications background and career goals or interests of students who would benefit from the course:
All students and clinicians, especially those with increased patient and family contact, psychiatry, pediatrics, family, palliative care

Description of course activities
There will be four main components of the course. 1) self-directed study and reading the book "Motivational Interviewing" and supplementary materials 2) small-group discussion of reading and role-playing scenarios to implement what is being learned 3) faculty contact time 4) final written essay entailing what was learned and how it will be useful in our careers

  A final written essay is mandatory; participation and attendance in small group sessions and faculty contact time can be in-person or by teleconference, if student is unable to attend a session student will need to re-schedule contact time or submit 1 page essay to director over topic discussed

2.  Written Assignment (Homework, projects, notes, papers, abstracts, etc.)
A. Frequency of written assignment(s)
  One end-of-period essay consisting of 3-5 typed pages (double spaced, Font size 12) not including references should be submitted to course director by the end of the period.
B. Type of written assignment
  Seminars or tutorials culminating in a research paper.
Basic science research plus documented written report.
Humanities, social sciences, biostatistical or epidemiological research culminating in a scholarly paper or written report.
Clinically-based written reports focusing on a basic science or humanities problem.
Journal club written reports
Grant proposals
Literature review
Oral presentation plus written report.
Other modality with a self-directed, scholarly research component culminating in a written report.

The instructor will discuss principles of appropriate attribution and the referencing of literature with the student. The student is expected to understand and to adhere to the principle that all presented work must be solely the student’s own.
