Learning Objectives
The topic will be assigned during discussion between the faculty and student prior to the beginning of the selective. The written product will be in the form of a case report with literature review that will detail the findings of a unique and interesting radiation oncology case from UTMB. The written report will review the basic science topics of relevant anatomy, epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, laboratory techniques, radiological findings, and the mechanisms of therapeutic options including pharmacological, surgical, and radiation for the topic chosen. The report will be based on literature review of the above topics and will also include current recommendations of diagnosis and management of the topic. Students will be expected to achieve a comprehensive understanding of their topic by the end of the selective. In addition, the student will gain experience in professional writing with the goal of submission for publication.

Describe the qualifications background and career goals or interests of students who would benefit from the course:
Students interested in a career in radiation oncology will benefit from this selective.

Description of course activities
1. The students duties will include chart review of the assigned patient and literature review of the corresponding topic.

2. The student is encouraged to attend the tumor board that corresponds to the topic and to participate in any academic activities relevant to the topic.

3. The student will prepare a written report with the possibility of submission for publication.

4. The student may choose to create a poster presentation of the written product with the possibility of presenting the poster at formal academic conferences.

  The student will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis. Criteria will include the quality of the written product and discussions with faculty and staff.

The instructor will discuss principles of appropriate attribution and the referencing of literature with the student. The student is expected to understand and to adhere to the principle that all presented work must be solely the student’s own.

    The faculty involved will provide supervision and advice regarding appropriateness of case selection, review and critique of written report and literature reference. Any written work submitted must be the students own original work.
