Learning Objectives
Students will participate in formal lectures designed to familiarize them with foundational space medicine topics, International Space Station Operations, and Medical Capability for Deep Space Exploration. Students are required to complete a research project and scientific poster with an accompanying 250-word abstract in a current focus area of space medicine, which will be presented in an open forum poster session at the Johnson Space Center.

Successful completion of this course will ensure that students:
1.    Have a familiarization with foundational space medicine topics.
2.    Have a familiarization with the International Space Station and low Earth orbit operations.
3.    Have a familiarization with the challenges of exploration-class missions and the efforts being made to overcome these challenges.
4.    Are prepared to develop an answerable research question relevant to Aerospace Medicine.
5.    Are prepared to locate and synthesize pertinent literature and population data.
6.    Are prepared to propose an appropriate study design and data collection method to analyze the research question.
7.    Are prepared to discuss the implications of their research for future space travel in the context of Aerospace Medicine.

Describe the qualifications background and career goals or interests of students who would benefit from the course:
Students must be their final year of medical school.
Interested persons must be a US Citizen (or hold dual citizenship to include the US)
Must have an interest in Aerospace Medicine and plan to apply in future career goals

Description of course activities
The four-week Aerospace Medicine Clerkship is offered during October at the Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center (located in Houston, TX) and typically begins the first Monday and concludes on the last Friday of the month. The clerkship involves formal lectures on space medicine topics and issues. Clerkship participants are required to complete a research project and scientific poster with an accompanying 250 word abstract in a current focus area of space medicine, which will be presented in an open forum poster session for not only the JSC Space Medicine Operations and clinical community, but other interested divisions/elements at JSC.

In addition to the poster presentation and abstract required by NASA JSC, students will submit a 10-page written overview of experiences and research completed over the duration of the clerkship to UTMB.

The clerkship involves formal lectures on space medicine topics and issues. Familiarization with the medical aspects of International Space Station operations, design, and function as well as Exploration Medical Capability for deep space exploration. The student will be assigned to a mentor for the duration of the clerkship for their research project.
