Learning Objectives
The project may focus on an area of on-going research or a faculty approved, student-selected topic. Students will be expected to:

1. Define a clear question related to public health and/or community engagement
2. Identify and apply an appropriate methodology
3. Locate and synthesize relevant literature and/or data
4. Develop a well-referenced deliverable, i.e. paper, that answers your original question
5. Include a discussion related to implication for policy or practice

Describe the qualifications background and career goals or interests of students who would benefit from the course:
This course is appropriate for medical students interested in public health and community
engagement. This is a required selective for students in the Community Engaged Public
Health Scholarly Concentration.

Description of course activities
Students will be paired with a faculty mentor, who will work with the student to complete a literature review, research project, or similar scholarly written work. If the question or project is with and/or for a community partner or preceptor, the student should attempt to engage them to provide insight and/or feedback, as their time permits. In addition to the paper, students will be required to present at a conference or symposium, such as the Global Health (October annually) or Public Health (April annually) Symposium.

  Evidence of weekly progress based on meetings and communication with faculty mentor. Successful completion of a scholarly written project. Students will be asked to present their work at the National Public Health Week Symposium or a similar conference or
symposia.

The instructor will discuss principles of appropriate attribution and the referencing of literature with the student. The student is expected to understand and to adhere to the principle that all presented work must be solely the student’s own.
