Application and Elective Rotations

Residency Program

All applications are submitted through ERAS, which will include:

  • Transcript
  • Photograph
  • 3 letters of recommendation
  • Personal statement
  • USMLE transcript
  • Curriculum vitae
  • If you are a foreign medical graduate interested in our program, we additionally require ECFMG certificate with permanent validation and adequate candidacy for a 7-year minimum visa (J1) or valid Green Card. We recommend at least 1 month participation in rotations with us and letters of recommendation from ABNS certified neurosurgeons.

The first year of residency is now a categorical year of training under the direction of the Neurosurgery Department. Students do not need to match or interview with General Surgery for the NS-1 intern year.

Applications must be complete and received by November 1st. At the time of interview request, applicants will be expected to submit a complete CV and a picture.

Elective Rotations

Participation in an elective rotation is not mandatory however it is encouraged. A minimum of one week is required although a 4-week period will bring the highest educational value to your experience. Applications for elective rotations will be scheduled on a first come first serve basis.

Your time at the UTMB Department of Neurosurgery will familiarize you with pre and postoperative neurosurgical care and daily procedures. Daily participation in the operating room is expected as well as in all academic conferences. Particular emphasis is placed in improving the performance of neurological exams, radiology interpretation and sound surgical judgment. It has been traditional that the candidate, at the end of the rotation will be able to do a presentation during Grand Rounds for the Department. During your stay we will also encourage you to participate in a manuscript with our residents and staff.
