Student Achievement

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) evaluates success with respect to student achievement consistent with its mission and with national criteria for health related institutions of higher learning. UTMB pursues and achieves its educational mission through the academic programs it offers in its four schools.

National Examination, Certification, and Licensure

All UTMB clinical programs maintain program specific accreditation. Each program, with the exception of Clinical Laboratory Sciences, has a licensure examination required for practice. In these cases, the generally accepted metric with regard to student achievement is the first-time pass rate. A widely accepted and UTMB's criterion is a 90% first-time pass rate as shown in Tables 1 and 2.

In the event the pass rate does not meet the criterion, programs receive immediate and intense attention by faculty, program, and school leadership.

Residency Matching

A closely monitored measure of the effectiveness of UTMB's medical education program and the competitiveness of medical school graduates is the rate at which they successfully place into residencies through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP) to complete the graduate medical education portion of their training. UTMB's criterion is 90%. Table 3 summarizes the NRMP rate of placement for the past five years.

UNDERGRADUATE Job Placement Rates

The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board tracks graduates of all undergraduate higher education programs in Texas and matches social security numbers to payroll data collected by the state as well as data from the federal government. The result is a profile of the employment rates for programs and schools at UTMB. UTMB's criterion is an 85% rate. Table 4 shows the employment rate for undergraduates who completed their educational program in the year indicated.
