Madeline is a first year Experimental Pathology PhD student at the University of Texas Medical Branch. She earned both a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and a Master of Public Health from the University of Florida. Before moving to Texas and attending UTMB, she worked at a mosquito control district in Florida for a few years. Her mixed bag of experiences in basic and applied sciences has developed into a broad interest in studying the ecology and transmission mechanisms of emerging infectious diseases and/or neglected tropical diseases.

Hisham O. Alsharif, MBBS is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

Dr. Hisham received his bachelor’s degree at the Mansoura Faculty of Medicine in Egypt in 2020, and then underwent a 12-month internship at Mansoura University Hospital in 2021.

Hisham’s interests include understanding the pathogenesis and transmission of emerging and endemic infectious diseases, particularly zoonotic respiratory viral infections.

Garrett Coleman is a first-year medical student at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He graduated from Baylor University in 2021 with a BBA in Business Fellows and Economics and minors in Biology, Biochemistry, and Medical Humanities.  

Garrett is interested in global health and is a part of the Global Health scholarly concentration at UTMB. He is Treasurer of the Pediatric Student Association and a Clinical Intern of the Medication Management Committee at St. Vincent’s Student Run Clinic. Garrett looks forward to integrating his experiences with One Health and Global Health into his future career as a physician.

Laura A. Pulscher, PhD, MSc is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas.

Dr. Pulscher received her PhD at the University of Sydney in Sydney, Australia where she studied health related threats to the critically endangered Christmas Island flying-fox. She also holds a Master of Science in Global Health from Duke University where she studied the ecology of tick-borne pathogens in northern Mongolia.

Dr. Pulscher is particularly interested in high consequence pathogens at the human, domestic animal, and wildlife interface. She has a varied background focused on human, animal, and environmental health and has studied a range of emerging pathogens including prions, respiratory and tick-borne pathogens across multiple countries.

Ashton Davis is a first-year medical student at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He graduated from the University of Kansas in 2021 studying Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology with a minor in business. 

Ashton is interested in global health work and is a part of the Global Health scholarly concentration at UTMB. He also serves as Co-President of Students Improving Global Health Together (SIGHT). Ashton’s interests are broad, but he hopes to translate what he learns from One Health into the field he pursues post-medical school.

Anthony D’Angelo, MS is a first-year medical and public health student at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Arizona in 2014 and a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from Colorado School of Mines in 2017.  

Anthony is interested in infectious diseases, especially viruses. After finishing medical school, he hopes to specialize in internal medicine with a subspecialty in infectious diseases and later work for a state or federal health institution.

Austin Weynand, MHS is a 1st year medical student at the University of Texas Medical Branch. He graduated from Baylor University with a Bachelor of Arts studying chemistry and economics, and received his Master of Health Science in Epidemiology on the Infectious Disease Track from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2021.

Austin’s research interests include emerging and endemic infectious diseases, particularly respiratory and tropical infections. His epidemiology research experience includes evaluating non-pharmaceutical interventions on pediatric deaths from malaria in northern Zambia with the Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute (JHMRI) and ICEMR. He also worked with the Johns Hopkins Center of Excellence in Influenza Research and Surveillance (CEIRS) as a data analyst to study the burden of influenza-like illnesses in southern Zambia during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Austin is an avid hiker, camper, runner and writer. He lives with his wife in League City, Texas. Long-term, he would like to work as a physician-scientist in Texas while maintaining research connections abroad.
