Dear colleagues,

Earlier today, during a town hall on the League City Campus, I shared an important update about continued UTMB investment in the Bay Area region. The UT System Board of Regents has approved a $300 million expansion of the UTMB Health League City Hospital Campus, representing an important step in strengthening our long-term commitment to the communities we serve.

Since opening League City’s first hospital in 2016, and expanding again in 2020, UTMB has played a central role in supporting the health and vitality of this growing region. This newly approved project builds on that foundation through strategic, forward-looking investments that expand capacity and enhance clinical capabilities to meet accelerating demand.

About the expansion

This multiphase development, expected to be completed by 2030, will enhance emergency and inpatient services and strengthen diagnostic and treatment capabilities across the campus.

Key components include:

  • A new 40‑bed Emergency Department designed to improve patient flow and expand access to emergency care
  • Advanced diagnostic imaging capabilities, including MRI, CT, ultrasound, and fluoroscopy
  • New inpatient and outpatient procedural imaging to support greater precision and efficiency
  • An expanded inpatient pharmacy and renovated laboratory spaces to improve workflow and diagnostic turnaround
  • Conversion of the existing 17‑bed Emergency Department into a 20‑bed Observation Unit
  • Relocation of administrative offices, training spaces, and outpatient rehabilitation to newly constructed areas, creating room for a new 20‑bed Medical-Surgical Unit

Each phase will open as it is completed, with the full project expected to be completed in 2030. This expansion strengthens our regional presence and positions us to meet the evolving needs of our communities.

Additional details will be shared as each project phase moves forward. Moments like this reflect what we can accomplish together. Our continued growth strengthens our ability to deliver exceptional care, advance education, and drive innovation across the region and beyond.

Sincerely,
