I am pleased to announce that, after an extensive national search that provided us an impressive slate of candidates, I have appointed Dr. Charles Mouton to the role of executive vice president and provost, and dean of the School of Medicine. He will assume his new responsibilities Monday, April 8.

Dr. Mouton has served as dean ad interim for the School of Medicine since August of last year, after joining UTMB in 2017 as vice dean for academic affairs and professor of family medicine.

Prior to UTMB, Dr. Mouton held a number of leadership and faculty roles at Meharry Medical College, including senior vice president for health affairs and dean of medicine from 2010 to 2014. He earned his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine, a Master of Science in clinical epidemiology from Harvard University School of Public Health and a Master of Business Administration from Tennessee Technological University.

Dr. Mouton has also served at Howard University College of Medicine, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He has been appointed to numerous national committees throughout his career, including his current service on the National Institutes of Health Council of Councils—a 27-member panel that advises the NIH director.

An experienced and collaborative physician, scientist, educator and leader, Dr. Mouton is well-versed in the need for research and clinical priorities to align for the good of those we serve. And, he has a vision for how UTMB can break new ground in training the next generation of caregivers and scientists to work in interprofessional teams and with emerging technology to meet the evolving needs of patients. I am confident that, under his skilled leadership, our academic enterprise will continue to progress and flourish.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Anish Bhardwaj for his service as provost ad interim. We greatly appreciate his steadfast leadership during this transition, and we look forward to continuing to work with him as professor and chair of neurology and vice provost for faculty affairs and professional development.

I am also grateful to the search committee, which was chaired by Donna Sollenberger, executive vice president and CEO of our Health System, and Dr. David Niesel, senior vice president and dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. The input of the committee and others involved in the interview process was most valuable in this important decision, and I appreciate everyone’s time and commitment to the search.

Please join me in thanking Dr. Bhardwaj and in congratulating Dr. Mouton on his new role. This is an exciting time for our academic enterprise and our entire university, and I look forward to working with everyone at UTMB to define what comes next in health care.
