Welcome Dr. Susan Chubinskaya, VP and Executive Vice Provost, Faculty Affairs & Professional Development

We are excited to welcome Susan Chubinskaya, PhD, as Vice President and Executive Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and Professional Development. She is a tenured Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation and holds the Peaches and Shrub Kempner Distinguished Professorship in Health Disparities.

Dr. Chubinskaya fills a key executive leadership role within the Academic Enterprise, where she leads the strategic development and direction for faculty affairs, faculty development, mentoring, and our career advancement programs. This includes oversight of the Health Education Center (HEC) with Dr. Katie Branch, the Institutional Effectiveness program with Dr. Chris McKee, and the Community Engagement and Education program with Dr. Miles Farr. Dr. Chubinskaya will also provide strategic direction for our CME/CNE efforts by supporting the UTMB community by way of webinars, virtual learning, and innovative events focused on knowledge and skills. She will also serve as the Provost liaison to our Faculty Senate colleagues.

Dr. Chubinskaya joins us from Rush University Medical Center in Chicago, where she made a lasting impact through her investment in and improvement of faculty members’ careers. She has held leadership roles in Faculty Affairs at Rush since 2010, most recently as Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs. Dr. Chubinskaya built a unique faculty management system and implemented a variety of professional and leadership development programs that helped increase faculty members’ scholarly productivity, extramural funding, retention of faculty at each career stage, and placement of postdoctoral fellows. Dr. Chubinskaya graduated from The Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program at Drexel University College of Medicine in 2014 and also became a certified executive coach in 2022.

She served as Professor in the Department of Pediatrics with joint appointments in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Internal Medicine, Division of Rheumatology. She served as Vice Chair for Research and Faculty Development in the Department of Pediatrics from 2015 to 2020. In 2007 she was named the Ciba-Geigy Professor of Biochemistry, and in 2017, this endowed chair was renamed as the Klaus Kuettner Professor of Osteoarthritis Research.

An internationally recognized expert in the field of cartilage repair/regeneration, Dr. Chubinskaya has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including Fellowship in the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) and the American Institute of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering (AIMBE), and the ORS Presidential Award, among others. Most recently, she was awarded the 2024 Arthur Steindler Award, a recognition by the Orthopaedic Research Society and the University of Iowa Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation for contributions to orthopaedics and the devotion of a significant portion of one’s career to furthering knowledge in the field of musculoskeletal disease.

Dr. Chubinskaya and team are located on the fifth floor of the Administration Building. I know that her knowledge and experience will be extremely valuable and will catapult our programs around faculty advancement and mentoring, and educational excellence. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Chubinskaya to UTMB!
