Welcome Dr. Salim Hayek, VP and Chief Transformation Officer

We are excited to share that Salim Hayek, MD, has joined UTMB as Vice President and Chief Transformation Officer, effective March 1. In this critical capacity, Dr. Hayek reports directly to Dr. Vicente Resto within the Faculty Group Practice, where he will lead pivotal transformation initiatives aimed at elevating patient care, enhancing clinical outcomes, streamlining operational efficiency, and advancing clinical research throughout our esteemed institution. Dr. Hayek is also a standing member of the President’s Executive Committee.

Dr. Hayek is a distinguished cardiologist with focus on cardio-oncology and biomarkers. As an NIH-funded physician-scientist with a robust academic and clinical leadership background, his work encompasses over five years of dedicated service in healthcare transformation. His tenure as the Medical Director of the University of Michigan’s Frankel Cardiovascular Center Clinics, the preeminent multidisciplinary cardiovascular center within the UM system, was marked by his innovative approach to optimizing physician compensation and clinical processes. This approach has yielded significant improvements in patient care and operational efficiency, underscoring his commitment to excellence.

His leadership extends beyond operational enhancements, having been instrumental in the development and implementation of novel care models, the refinement of clinical workflows, and the efficient utilization of resources. Dr. Hayek's expertise in integrating state-of-the-art research into clinical practice, particularly his work in translational science, inflammation mechanisms linking kidney and cardiovascular disease, and the application of novel biomarkers and proteomics, has set new standards in personalized therapy and preventive strategies.

With a profound understanding and experience across the spectrum of our four-pronged mission, Dr. Hayek is uniquely positioned to offer strategic leadership, drive innovation, and harmonize the academic and clinical missions at UTMB. His comprehensive experience and results-oriented approach promise to propel our Clinical Enterprise to new heights in order to better serve our patients and communities.
