A Message from the Interim Senior Vice President and Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine, and Chief Research Officer

Dear Colleagues,

I am delighted to announce that Rebekah Viner, MS, MBA, has been appointed Associate Vice President of Academic and Research Affairs in the Office of the Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine, effective May 1, 2025.

Ms. Viner has been an integral member of the UTMB community for the past 15 years, consistently demonstrating outstanding leadership, professionalism, and commitment. In her previous role as Administrator in the Academic Enterprise, she played a key part in advancing our institutional mission through her expertise in strategic planning, financial management, and research administration.

She holds an MBA with a concentration in Leadership from the University of Houston–Clear Lake and an MS in Biomedical Sciences from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at UTMB. Over the course of her career, Ms. Viner has taken on increasingly complex responsibilities, each time bringing forward innovation, collaboration, and a clear vision for progress.

In her new role, Ms. Viner will provide strategic oversight and operational leadership across a broad spectrum of academic and research initiatives. She will play a critical role in fostering interdisciplinary collaboration among departments, research institutes, centers, and core facilities to advance our institutional priorities. Her portfolio will include optimizing academic and research infrastructure, driving faculty recruitment and retention efforts, and spearheading initiatives that promote innovation, excellence, and accountability. Additionally, she will lead process improvement and strategic alignment initiatives that enhance institutional efficiency, support research growth, and strengthen UTMB’s national reputation. Through close collaboration with academic leaders, investigators, and administrative teams, Ms. Viner will help ensure that our academic and research missions are not only sustained but meaningfully elevated in the years ahead.

Please join me in congratulating Ms. Viner on this well-deserved promotion. We look forward to her continued leadership and the positive impact she will bring in this expanded role.

Sincerely,

Antonio C. Bianco, MD, PhD
