His scholarship includes more than 140 peer‑reviewed publications, with landmark studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, JAMA, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, and Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, among others. His work has directly influenced national practice guidelines in areas such as fracture infection prevention, thromboprophylaxis, limb salvage, and rehabilitation after severe injury.
In addition to his research accomplishments, Dr. Gary is an award‑winning educator and mentor. He has been repeatedly recognized for teaching excellence at multiple institutions and has mentored medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty throughout his career. He has also served in leadership roles across professional societies, including the American Orthopaedic Association, Orthopaedic Trauma Association, and AOTrauma, where he has chaired research committees and contributed to national and educational initiatives.
As Chair at UTMB, Dr. Gary will provide strategic leadership across the department’s clinical programs, research enterprise, and educational mission, with a focus on advancing high‑quality patient care, expanding clinical trial participation, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, and preparing the next generation of orthopaedic professionals. His appointment reflects our institution’s continued commitment to excellence in musculoskeletal care, innovation in trauma and rehabilitation research, and leadership in academic medicine.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to Ronald W. Lindsey, MD, FAOA, FAAOS, FACS, for his dedicated service and impactful leadership. As he looks ahead to retirement, we recognize and thank him for his many years of commitment and for the lasting legacy he leaves within the department.
