A Message from the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs; Chair, Department of Medical Education
The John Sealy School of Medicine is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. J. Patrik Hornak as Associate Dean for Global Initiatives.
In this role, he will provide strategic leadership for the advancement of global academic, clinical, educational, and research partnerships across the John Sealy School of Medicine while collaborating with institutional leadership, faculty, and external partners to further expand the school’s international presence and impact.
Originally from the Dayton, Ohio area, Dr. Hornak earned his MD degree from the University of Cincinnati before completing internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship training at UTMB. During his training, he received the Don W. Powell Award for Excellence and was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He joined the faculty in 2022 as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases within the Department of Internal Medicine and currently serves as Program Director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program and Clinical Director of UTMB’s AIDS Education & Training Center Program.
Dr. Hornak has also played an important role in advancing UTMB’s international educational partnerships, particularly through the medical education exchange program between UTMB and Teine Keijinkai Hospital in Sapporo, Japan. Through this work, he has helped strengthen cross-cultural collaboration and expand educational opportunities for resident physicians.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys gardening, running, skiing, international travel, collecting model airplanes, and searching for his next great cup of coffee.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Hornak on this new leadership role and in supporting his efforts to further expand the John Sealy School of Medicine’s global engagement initiatives.
