Varekojis Named Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, SHP

A Message from the Senior Vice President & Dean, School of Health Professions

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Sarah Varekojis, PhD, RRT, RRT-ACCS, FNAP, FAARC, will join the School of Health Professions as Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, effective Monday, July 6, 2026.

Dr. Varekojis brings extensive experience in respiratory therapy education, program development, and academic leadership. She joins us from The Ohio State University, where she served as a faculty member and academic leader, playing a key role in advancing both undergraduate and graduate respiratory therapy programs.

She is recognized for her commitment to student success, innovative curriculum design, and strong collaboration with clinical and professional partners. Her work has helped prepare highly skilled, compassionate respiratory therapists and contributed to the continued growth and excellence of her programs. Among her many accomplishments, Dr. Varekojis led the creation and execution of the first accredited Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapist (APRT) education program in the United States.

In addition to her academic work, Dr. Varekojis has made significant contributions to the respiratory therapy profession through service and leadership. She has served as President of the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care, chaired and co-chaired several American Association for Respiratory Care committees focused on education and workforce development, and played a leading role in legislative efforts for APRT licensure in Ohio.

Dr. Varekojis’ experience, vision, and collaborative approach will be a tremendous asset as we continue to strengthen our academic programs, support faculty success, and enhance student learning across the School of Health Professions.

Please join me in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Varekojis as she joins the SHP family.

Warm regards,

David L. Vines, PhD, RRT, FAARC, FCCP
Senior Vice President and Dean, School of Health Professions
