Bukreyev Appointed Inaugural Director of the Center for Nucleic Acid Technologies at UTMB

A Message from the Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine; Senior Vice President of Health Affairs; and Chief Research Officer

Dear colleagues,

I am pleased to announce that Alexander Bukreyev, PhD, has been appointed the inaugural Director of the Center for Nucleic Acid Technologies at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB).

An internationally recognized virologist and innovator in molecular medicine, Dr. Bukreyev brings outstanding scientific expertise and a distinguished record of leadership in infectious disease research, vaccine development, and nucleic acid-based technologies. His appointment marks an important milestone as UTMB launches the Center for Nucleic Acid Technologies to advance discoveries and applications in RNA and DNA technologies, therapeutics, diagnostics, and vaccine development.

Dr. Bukreyev serves as Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology. His research has focused on the development of vaccines and antiviral strategies for emerging and high-consequence viral pathogens, and he has led numerous federally funded research programs that have strengthened our institution’s national leadership in biodefense and translational science.

Under Dr. Bukreyev’s leadership, the Center for Nucleic Acid Technologies will serve as a catalyst for interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together investigators from across UTMB to develop innovative approaches that accelerate scientific discovery and improve human health. The center will strengthen our capabilities in next-generation therapeutics and position our institution at the forefront of this rapidly evolving field.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Bukreyev on this well-deserved appointment. I am grateful for his leadership and commitment to advancing research excellence at UTMB, and I look forward to supporting his vision for the center’s growth and impact.
