A Message from the Dean, John Sealy School of Medicine; and Senior Vice President of Health Affairs

I am pleased to announce that Janice Jones Endsley, PhD, has accepted the new role of Associate Dean for Discovery Science at the UTMB John Sealy School of Medicine (JSSOM), effective Sept. 1, 2026.

Dr. Jones Endsley is a tenured Professor and Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at JSSOM, the Mildred Hajek Vacek and John Roman Vacek Distinguished Chair, and holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Pathology.  She is an accomplished microbiologist, educator, and academic leader and has been an asset to UTMB for two decades.

Dr. Jones Endsley earned her PhD from Iowa State University in 2000. She went on to complete USDA and NIH T32 postdoctoral fellowships in infectious disease and host defense in the Department of Veterinary Pathobiology at the University of Missouri – Columbia and the Department of Pediatrics at UTMB. An internationally recognized immunologist, Dr. Jones Endsley joined the UTMB faculty in 2006 and has built a distinguished career in infectious disease research, with a focus on tuberculosis and HIV co-infection, while mentoring numerous students, graduate trainees, and postdoctoral fellows. Prior to her appointment as Associate Dean for Discovery Science, she served as Associate Dean for Student Affairs in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, co-directorship of the NIH T32 Biodefense Training Program, and Director of the Flow Cytometry Core Facility.

In this new role, Dr. Jones Endsley will work in the office of the Vice Dean for Research and serve as a senior advisor to the Dean, helping guide and strengthen the school’s discovery science mission. As Associate Dean, she will work closely with Dr. Abbey Berenson, Vice Dean for Research in the JSSOM; department chairs; and other school and institutional leaders to help articulate and advance the strategy, goals, priorities, and resource needs of our discovery science enterprise.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Jones Endsley on this well-earned appointment and welcoming her to this important leadership role.
