UTMB's animal care and use program maintains an assurance in accordance with the Public Health Service Policy on Humane Care and Us of Laboratory Animals (PHS Policy), is United states Department of Agriculture registered, and fully accredited by AAALAC,
International since 1995.
The IACUC is charged with ensuring all animal research at UTMB is conducted in accordance with the PHS Policy, Animal Welfare Act and Regulations, and within the guidelines and standards as outlined in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals
the "Guide".
The IACUC will review and if warranted, investigate concerns involving the care and Use of animals at the research facility. At times, a result of an investigation may require the UTMB Animal Care and Use Program Institutional Official to report to our
regulatory authorities and accreditation authorities OLAW, AALAC and or USDA. The IACUC is authorized to suspend an already approved activity involving animals if it is not being conducted in accordance with applicable provisions of the Animal Welfare
Act, the "Guide", and or the institution’s assurance or IV.C1.a-g of the PHS Policy.
