Dr. Downer Awarded New NIH/NIA Grant
Brian Downer, PhD, has been awarded a multi-year grant through 2024 from the National Institute on Aging for a grant titled, "The influence of social and cultural context on life course pathways for Alzheimer’s disease, related dementia, and care resources for older Mexican adults." Co-investigators include Bret Howrey, PhD, Rafael Samper-Ternent, MD, PhD, Daniel Jupiter, PhD, and Rebeca Wong, PhD. This project will use the Mexican Health and Aging Study as a main data source to identify life course pathways that influence dementia risk, the availability of care resources, and how care resources are used among older adults in a country with low institutional support, high inequality, and the likely care burden of dementia for families and institutions. Dr. Downer is a scholar in the UTMB Pepper Center.
