Dear Colleagues,

Please join the Sealy Center on Aging and the UTMB Pepper Center in congratulating Dr. Brian Downer, PhD, FACRM, FGSA, on his election to the Board of Directors of the Gerontological Society of America (GSA).

GSA, the oldest and largest interdisciplinary organization focused on aging, recently announced its newly elected officers and board members. Chosen by the society's membership of more than 6,000 researchers, educators, and practitioners, Dr. Downer will assume his new leadership role on January 1, 2027.

Dr. Downer is an Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health and Health Disparities in UTMB's School of Public and Population Health. His research focuses on Alzheimer's disease and cognitive decline, population health and aging, and healthcare utilization among older adults. His work seeks to inform interventions, clinical guidelines, and health policies that improve outcomes for aging populations.

Beyond his research, Dr. Downer is a dedicated mentor and educator. He directs doctoral training programs in Population Health Sciences and Rehabilitation and Health Services Research and co-directs a National Institute on Aging-supported training program for students and postdoctoral fellows studying minority health and aging.

His election to the GSA Board of Directors is a significant professional achievement and a reflection of the impact of his scholarship, leadership, and service to the field of gerontology.

Please join us in congratulating Dr. Downer on this well-deserved honor.

Best regards,

The Sealy Center on Aging and Pepper Center at UTMB
