The UTMB Health Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center

A Warm Holiday Greeting from the Sealy Center on Aging

Dec 23, 2025, 09:26 AM by SCOA

Dear SCOA Community,

As 2025 draws to a close, I want to wish you and your families a wonderful holiday season and express my gratitude for an outstanding year of achievements across our Center.

  • Research: We successfully renewed our P30 Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center and launched the $5 million Texas Age-Tech Initiative. The P30 Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) continues to thrive, and our 28th Annual Forum on Aging brought together researchers and community members to share new findings in the science of aging.

  • Clinical & Education: We secured funding for the T35 MSTAR program for medical students and continued our successful T32 training program for pre- and postdoctoral fellows.

  • Community Engagement and Communications: Monthly health education presentations were offered countywide at senior centers, community organizations, and health fairs to boost awareness and connection to aging research. Our Facebook community grew by 300+ followers this year, and our website now averages 150 daily visitors. We launched an Instagram account this fall to engage medical students and the community in geriatrics. The student-led Stories of Aging oral history series reached 6,000+ views in its first month.

  • New Faces: We welcomed Elizabeth Huber as our new Senior Business Coordinator and Diego Urrunaga-Pastor, MD, a visiting scholar from Peru, to the team.

  • Looking Ahead to 2026: We're excited about our upcoming Lefeber Hughes Winter Series on Aging starting January 27th (all are welcome to attend), the continuation of Stories of Aging, the 14th volume of the quarterly Community Connection newsletter, and the launch of new research studies exploring nutrition, sleep, caregiving, and our Age-Tech instrumented home.

Thank you for your dedication to improving the health and well-being of older adults. Wishing you all a happy and healthy new year!

Warm regards,
Missy
