Seeking adults 55+ with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus for a research study

Apr 9, 2026, 10:59 AM by SCOA

Researchers in the Department of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences are studying whether a home-based exercise program can help adults with Type 2 Diabetes and mild memory or thinking changes. This study has been reviewed and approved for safety (IRB# 25-0195). Before joining, you will be asked to sign a consent form to show you agree to participate — and you are free to stop participating at any time, for any reason, with no penalty.

We are looking for volunteers between the ages of 55 and 80 who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus.

Here is what participation involves:

  •  A willingness to conduct a memory test to make sure the program is a good fit for you.
  •  A health check and some surveys at the start, which takes about 1.5 hours
  •  36 exercise sessions over 12 weeks (about 1 hour each)
  •  Sessions are done partly in person and partly from home using a video call — so you do not need to travel every time.
  •  All appointments are scheduled at a time that works for you.
  •  You will receive compensation for completing the study.

Any questions regarding the study may be directed to:

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) Institutional Review Board (IRB), which reviews research involving human subjects, is available to address any questions about your rights as a research participant and to receive any comments or complaints you may have. The UTMB IRB can be contacted at IRB@UTMB.edu.
