Doctorate and Public Health Dual Degree - PhD/MPH

PhD students at UTMB have the opportunity to earn the Master of Public Health degree while enrolled in the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. MPH training provides select students with the knowledge, skills, and values needed to succeed in public health research and practice careers. 

Our MPH Program includes coursework and learning experiences that prepare graduates to contribute to and apply the evidence base supporting population and public health. 

MPH Degree Requirements

Dual degree students must meet the core requirements of the Master of Public Health (MPH) Program, as well as the requirements of their chosen curricular track.

Up to 12 credits in the student's doctoral curriculum may be counted as dual credits for the MPH degree.

The student's advisory committee will include members of the Public Health Program, as well as the student's doctoral advisor.

How to Apply

UTMB doctoral students may apply to the program through the UTMB Health Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS). Doctoral students must have completed PhD qualifying exams prior to beginning the Master of Public Health Program.

To apply: Please complete an application through SOPHAS Express (including application fee, demographic info, three letters of reference, personal statement, and transcripts [from UTMB and other institutions attended]. 

The personal statement and letters of reference should specifically address the student's interest in public health and his or her ability to complete the degree. One of the letters of reference should be from the student's doctoral advisor, and he or she must state that the student will be allowed the time necessary to complete the Public Health coursework and requirements.

The MPH Admissions Committee will also schedule personal interviews with candidates.
