About AETC
Mission Statement
The South Central AETC works to ensure that all people in New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, and the tribal nations therein have access to best practices for screening, prevention, and treatment of HIV, and will reduce variations in HIV care, thereby improving the quality of life for persons living with or at risk for HIV.
Where We Work
Correctional Managed Care: The UTMB-CMC Section of Clinical Virology oversees clinical care for TDCJ patients infected with HIV, chronic HBV and HCV infections. The team co-manages these infections with the Unit providers. In addition, the section provides educational activities through lecture series during conferences and Webinars in the Computer Learning Portal platform.

Practice Transformation (PT)
Practice Transformation (PT)
Practice Transformation (PT) is a process that improves primary care delivery. The program collaborates with clinics to improve patient outcomes for HIV care. The process involves setting goals, providing leadership, implementing quality improvement, and adapting organizational tools. Our PT Coaches help healthcare organizations achieve their PT goals, such as increasing HIV screenings and PrEP users, patient retention, and linking patients to care.

History of UTMB AETC
Dr. Philip Keiser initiated the inaugural AETC in Texas in the late 1990s, bringing the program to Parkland Hospital to provide training for health care providers working on HIV-related issues. In 2008, Dr. Keiser moved appointments to UTMB and developed UTMB into a AETC site. Since that time, UTMB has grown to provide HIV-related training to healthcare providers across the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and locally within Galveston, Brazoria, Matagorda, Chambers and Jefferson counties. The faculty at AETC-UTMB, and colleagues throughout the UTMB medical system, care for thousands of HIV patients, and are active in a variety of implementation and research projects related to HIV in Texas, the United States and around the world. If you are interested in attending our regular trainings, collaborating on a special project, or receiving clinical mentorship in matters related to HIV, please contact us.
