The Texas AHEC East – Coastal Region serves eight counties along the Texas coast—Brazoria, Chambers, Hardin, Liberty, Galveston, Jefferson, Matagorda, and Orange. Home to more than 1.2 million residents, the region reflects a dynamic mix of urban and rural communities.
From thriving healthcare systems and educational institutions to chemical, agricultural, and industrial employers, the Coastal Region plays a vital role in supporting the health and economic wellbeing of Southeast Texas.
We’re proud to collaborate with community-based organizations, schools, and healthcare agencies to improve access to care, strengthen the healthcare workforce, and support healthier communities for all who call this region home.
Our region is also home to several leading academic partners, including Lamar University, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Texas A&M University Galveston, and a number of outstanding community colleges.
Our Programs
Community-Based Student Placement Support
The Coastal Regional Office provides placement and coordination for hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for careers in healthcare. We connect health professions students with real-world training opportunities across the region, helping them gain the skills and perspective needed to serve in diverse community settings.
Community Health Worker (CHW) Training
Certified through the Texas Department of State Health Services, the Coastal Region offers the 160-hour certification courses for both Community Health Workers (CHWs) and CHW Instructors.
We also provide continuing education opportunities to support the growth and professional development of CHWs and instructors.
Local CHW and promotor(a) associations benefit from our ongoing collaboration, mentorship, and training-site support, empowering them to better meet the health needs of the communities they serve.
