UTMB Vascular Surgery with “Editor’s Choice” publication in top journal

Oct 2, 2024, 13:09 PM by John Carstens

Dr. Mitchell Cox and the vascular surgery team will have their article, “Perioperative and intermediate outcomes of patients with pulmonary embolism undergoing catheter-directed thrombolysis vs percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy,” published in the Journal of Vascular Surgery: Venous and Lymphatic Disorders as the “Editors Choice” for the month.

Thrombolytic therapy has long been a cornerstone in treating massive or submassive pulmonary embolism (PE), a frequently encountered life-threatening condition. Recently, new percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy (PMT) devices have become more accessible and are increasingly used for acute PE treatment, however, evidence comparing their effectiveness to standard catheter-directed thrombolysis remains limited.  This large, multicenter database study established the effectiveness of these newer devices, which were shown to be superior to traditional catheter-directed thrombolytic therapy.   This may have a significant impact on the treatment of PE.

It will be highlighted this month in this prestigious journal which is the most recognized publication worldwide in the venous disease space.
