Jochen Reiser, MD, PhD, president of The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) and CEO of the UTMB Health System, has been selected as Business Person of the Year by The Galveston County Daily News.
The Business Person of the Year is chosen by the Daily News editorial team as part of its overall Citizen of the Year program. Rather than a traditional nomination pool, the selection is based on individuals whose impact on the business community and the region has stood out over the past year.
“Dr. Reiser’s leadership at The University of Texas Medical Branch has had a meaningful impact not only on healthcare in Galveston County, but also on the region’s economic strength and future growth,” Daily News Publisher Michelle Robinson said. “His work reflects a balance of innovation, community partnership, and long-term vision, which are all qualities we look to recognize with this award. His ability to lead a major institution while maintaining a strong connection to the community made him a clear choice.”
Since joining UTMB in August 2023, Reiser has led significant transformation across the institution, advancing a bold, integrated vision that unites education, research, clinical care, and innovation.
Under his leadership, UTMB has:
- Reorganized the institution to break down silos and align missions through an immersive leadership model that strengthens collaboration across all areas
- Elevated innovation to a core institutional pillar, establishing a dedicated innovation center, embedding innovation into academic programs, and supporting partnerships with emerging health and AI companies
- Achieved measurable gains in quality and safety, including multiple Leapfrog “A” ratings and national recognition for pediatric inpatient care
- Positioned UTMB as a global leader in the emerging brain economy, advancing brain health and brain capital as central to long-term societal and economic well-being
- Launched the Moody Brain Health Institute, strengthening neuroscience research and care while expanding global partnerships
- Advanced the Sealy Heart & Vascular Institute, a more than $100 million investment to expand cardiovascular care, research, and education
- Expanded access to care through a $300 million League City campus expansion
- Secured approval to bring the Blue Zones Project to Galveston, advancing a community-wide focus on longevity and prevention
- Delivered a comprehensive brand transformation aligned with The University of Texas System, anchored by a new tagline, “Where Purpose Meets Passion.”
- Strengthened organizational culture through the implementation of the Wambi employee recognition platform
- Reinvigorated and expanded a comprehensive cancer care program, enhancing access to advanced therapies, clinical trials, and integrated oncology services across the region
- Advanced the responsible integration of artificial intelligence to enhance clinical decision-making and operational efficiency while supporting the expertise of the workforce
Reiser, an internationally recognized physician-scientist, is known for pioneering research in kidney disease, with discoveries that have advanced new treatment pathways and clinical applications. He is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina — one of the world’s oldest academies — reflecting the global impact of his work.
Before joining UTMB, he held leadership and faculty roles at Rush University Medical Center, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, and Harvard Medical School.
