The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) launched the inaugural issue of UTMB Magazine on June 9, introducing a new flagship publication designed to showcase the people, discoveries, and impact shaping the future of health.
The magazine looks beyond the headlines, offering readers an in-depth view of the work and lives that define UTMB.
“At its deepest level, the work we do at The University of Texas Medical Branch is about one timeless truth: people need one another,” said Dr. Jochen Reiser, president of UTMB and CEO of the UTMB Health System. “UTMB Magazine is a celebration of that impulse. Through every story, every photograph, and every perspective, this publication will shine a light on the people who care, teach, discover, and imagine a healthier future for us all.”
The magazine will be published biannually with copies available on UTMB campuses, at local events with a UTMB presence, and mailed to a limited number of Galveston County neighborhoods.
The publication is designed to reach prospective students, donors, policymakers, and community leaders, offering long-form storytelling that highlights the UTMB impact across clinical care, education, research, and innovation.
“With this new magazine, our goal is to go beyond announcements to the human stories that define this institution,” said Christopher Smith Gonzalez, executive editor of UTMB Magazine. “These are stories of resilience, discovery, and connection. They reflect not only what we do, but why it matters to the people and communities we serve.”
In the inaugural issue, readers will meet a young boy with Duchenne muscular dystrophy whose life is transformed by groundbreaking gene therapy and see how UTMB researchers are pioneering new approaches to strengthen brain health and combat dementia. Readers will share in the excitement of Match Day, the joy of a young girl who regains her ability to hear, and the thrill of discovery and innovation across the institution.
“As you read, I hope you enjoy the discoveries, the achievements, and the remarkable work captured here,” Reiser said. “But more than anything, I hope you feel the spirit of UTMB reflected back at you: the belief that every person matters, every moment of care has meaning, and every small spark of curiosity can ignite a brighter tomorrow.”
