
Recovery continues in the City of Galveston and at UTMB’s campus-based facilities after impact from Hurricane Ike. A number of clinical services have now been restored on the UTMB campus, and most of UTMB’s mainland-based clinics and facilities are open to serve patients.

1,000 babies and counting
A La Porte couple are the proud parents of the 1,000th baby born at UTMB since Hurricane Ike slammed into the hospital. Weighing in at 6 pounds, 5 ounces, Consuelo Velazquez was born at 7:47 p.m. at John Sealy Hospital. Read the full story in the UTMB Newsroom.
Additional clinics now open in Galveston
UTMB reopened more than a dozen additional clinics in December, marking another significant milestone in recovery efforts following damage from Hurricane Ike three months earlier. Most of the clinics are housed in the University Hospital Clinics building (UHC), on the university’s Galveston campus adjacent to the Emergency Room. These sites join an extensive network of mainland and Galveston Island clinic locations already in service. The University Hospital Clinics building is accessible from Public Parking Garage 2 on Harborside Drive, and is located to the south of the UTMB Emergency Room. Texas Transplant Center opens outreach clinic in Beaumont
The Texas Transplant Center at UTMB has opened a Liver Transplant and Hepatobiliary outreach clinic in Beaumont for the management of complex liver disease. Patients will be seen by appointment only. To schedule an appointment or to make a referral, please call 800-323-4109.
UTMB ob-gyn clinic returning to Galveston Island
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UTMB will reopen for outpatient services Monday, Nov. 24, on the UTMB campus.
The clinic is located on the third floor of the University Hospital Clinics building, which is accessible from Public Parking Garage 2 on Harborside Drive. Physicians offering general ob-gyn services at the clinic include Drs. Russell Snyder, Leslie Chupp, Virginia Rauth, Daniel Breitkopf, Gokhan Kilic and Regan Theiler. Also offering services are Dr. Edward Hannigan, gynecological-oncology; and Drs. Tristi Muir and Catalin Jurnalov, urogynecology and female pelvic floor dysfunction services.
Other physicians from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology continue to practice at the Women’s Health Center at Bay Colony in League City.

Family Medicine extends hours and open on weekends at Stewart Road Clinic
Doing a lot of juggling of tasks in your personal and professional life? Don't put off taking care of your health. UTMB's Department of Family Medicine makes it easy to fit care into busy schedules. Family Medicine is now offering extended hours at the Stewart Road Family Health clinic to make it easier for you and your family to stay healthy through this holiday season. Stewart Road Family Health is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The clinic will be closed Thursday, Nov. 27 and Friday, Nov. 28 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday; however, the clinic reopens with normal clinic hours at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 29.

UTMB Trauma Center earns top honors nationally for survival rate
UTMB’s Level 1 Trauma Center has been ranked by the National Trauma Data Bank as first in survival rate among all Level 1 trauma centers in the nation. “This is an extraordinary accomplishment and everyone at UTMB should be proud of their contribution in helping to make our trauma center exemplary,” said Dr. Bill Mileski, chief of trauma services in the Department of Surgery. The ranking was announced Nov. 5. A Level I trauma center provides the highest level of surgical care, skilled medical specialists and equipment to treat the most severely injured patients. Although activities at the UTMB Trauma Center are currently suspended due to the effects of Hurricane Ike, the center's status is being assessed regularly as part of UTMB’s recovery process. Patients currently presenting in the emergency room are being treated, stabilized and transferred.
UTMB Physical & Occupational Therapy Clinic open in Texas City
The UTMB Rehabilitation Services Outpatient Clinic--formerly located in the Ike-damaged Primary Care Pavilion on the UTMB campus--is providing service from a new outpatient physical therapy and occupational therapy clinic in Texas City. The new office opened Monday, Nov. 10, at the Oceanview Transitional Care Center, 519 9th Ave. North (the site of the former Danforth clinic). The clinic is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

New UTMB Geriatric Clinic now open in Texas City
A new UTMB Geriatric Clinic opened Monday, Nov. 3, in Texas City, at the Oceanview Transitional Care Center, 519 9th Ave. North (the site of the former Danforth clinic). UTMB physician-geriatricians that were formerly practicing in Galveston and Santa Fe are now serving patients at this new location, chosen for its relative proximity and ease of access. Several of UTMB’s facilities were damaged during Hurricane Ike and university staff has mobilized to restore clinical services at alternate locations, including this one.
The UTMB faculty physicians now practicing in Texas City are Drs. Vinod Kaushik, Mukaila Raji, Liliana Andrade, Maria Camacho, James Goodwin and Elena Volpi. Fellows at the practice are Drs. David Schnaiderman, Fariba Shoja-Taherif and J.G. Garcia-Gallegos. The clinic is also home to nurse practitioners Andrea Poindexter, Jonne Davis and Colleen Stegman.
