UTMB Health has a long and distinguished history of educating professionals who shape the future of healthcare. Our pursuit of American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet® designation represents the next step in that ongoing legacy. Magnet recognition is the highest national honor for nursing excellence, reflecting an organization’s commitment to exemplary patient care, empowered nursing practice, strong interprofessional collaboration, and a culture that supports professional growth.

Our journey toward Magnet designation reflects both who we are today and our aspirations for the future. Through alignment with the Magnet framework, we continue to strengthen the values of our Nursing Services team by enhancing structures, elevating staff voices, and advancing opportunities for continuous improvement.

This work underscores our commitment to the community and highlights the passion and dedication of the nurses who define UTMB. Together, we honor a distinguished history while building a future where nursing practice continues to advance, patients receive exceptional care, and UTMB strives to set the standard for nursing excellence across the region and beyond.

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB), founded in 1891, stands as one of Texas’ most enduring pillars of health sciences education, research, and patient care. As a proud member of the University of Texas System and an integral part of the Texas Medical Center, the world’s largest medical complex, UTMB has shaped the landscape of modern medicine for more than a century.

Today, UTMB’s 99-acre campus is home to five distinguished schools, five institutes for advanced study, a state-of-the-art Medical Research Building, a Level 1 Trauma Center, and a Level 4 biosafety laboratory dedicated to infectious disease research. With approximately 3,200 students and more than 1,000 faculty members, UTMB continues to lead in discovery, education, and community health innovation. The institution serves patients through a robust network of hospitals and 113 primary and specialty care clinics, along with the world’s largest telehealth program, facilitating more than 129,000 telemedicine encounters in 2025.

Nursing has been interwoven with UTMB’s mission since the institution’s earliest days. As the oldest nursing school west of the Mississippi River, UTMB has educated generations of nurses grounded in service, science, and leadership. This legacy continues to thrive as UTMB nurses shape care delivery across the region, caring for diverse populations, advancing safety and quality, and driving innovation in practice.

UTMB has stood as a major health care provider for individuals from all backgrounds for more than 130 years. Today, our commitment remains unwavering: to train exceptional nurses, advance health for our communities, and honor the rich heritage that built the foundation for UTMB nursing excellence.
