TOE is the innovative Theater Outreach and Education Program at UTMB's Institute for the Medical Humanities. TOE uses theater as a tool for education to raise awareness of health science and medical humanities issues within the university and the community. We encourage both youth and adults to learn about what affects their health by means of an enjoyable, imaginative, interactive and, of course, entertaining educational forum. TOE welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with community groups to originate programs that have special relevance to that community. We create site-specific works when an individual, group or organization approaches TOE requesting a program, including theatre productions, videos, workshops, lectures, or classroom sessions, to suit a specific need within the community. If you would like to receive more information about one of our programs, want TOE to present for your organization, have an idea for collaboration or wish to play a part with TOE by getting more involved, please contact Cheryl L. Kaplan at 409/772-9395 or clkaplan@utmb.edu. Programs

Positive Drama in the Classroom A module in the Texas Summer Teacher Training Institute, "Positive Drama in the Classroom" emphasizes the importance of using as many artistic mediums as possible to teach a subject. Designed to help teachers understand the process of creation and the significance of learning by doing, the workshop is composed of various activities that encourage the exploration of music, art, dance and theater. These theatrical activities aid in developing a myriad of life-essential skills, including the enhancement of cognitive skills, engaging in creative and critical thinking, exploring kinesthetic intelligence, improving oral language skills and reading comprehension, identifying causal elements in thematic games and exercises, and strengthening confidence with positive drama in the classroom.
