Assistant Professor

Dr. Ruth E. Levine is the Clarence Ross Miller Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions at UTMB. She has been a faculty member since 1991. In addition to her administrative and teaching responsibilities, Dr. Levine maintains an established outpatient practice within the Psychiatry department with a specific interest in mood and anxiety disorders. Dr. Levine is also a certified therapist in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy since 1995.

She was born in Albany, New York. Her bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts was received from the University of Texas. She received her medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Levine completed a one‐year internship in Internal Medicine at UTMB, followed by a three‐year psychiatric residency at Boston University’s School of Medicine. Dr. Levine maintains memberships in several scientific societies. These include the American Psychiatric Association, The Team‐Based Learning Collaborative (TBLC), and the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry. She is the Past President of the TBLC and is currently the Associate Editor of the TBL collection in MedEdPORTAL, the journal of teaching resources administered by the AAMC. She is also active within the Association of American Medical Colleges, where she serves as a coach and advisory board member of the LEAD (Leadership Education and Development) Certification program.

Dr. Levine has been the recipient of numerous honors. Some of these have included UTMB Dean’s Award for Teaching Achievement, the American Psychiatric Association’s Roeske Award for Excellence in Medical Student Education, the University of Texas System Regent’s Outstanding Teaching Award, and ADMSEP’s Sierles award for Leadership and Excellence in Psychiatric Education. She was the inaugural director of UTMB’s Academy of Master Teachers and is a member of the University Of Texas Academy Of Health Science Educators.

Her publications are numerous and include articles in peer‐reviewed journals, chapters, books, educational materials, abstracts and professional presentations. She is best known for her work in Team‐Based Learning. She co‐edited the book “Team‐Learning in Health Science Education’ and has provided faculty development in TBL for teachers in medicine, nursing, pharmacy and other disciplines nationally and internationally.
