About the Program:

Four-year residency program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our mission is to prepare residents to become well-rounded general psychiatrists through strong clinical training and a comprehensive foundation in the biological, psychological, and social sciences. We are committed to providing a balanced educational experience that integrates evidence-based knowledge with hands-on clinical care. Throughout residency, trainees develop their clinical skills while gaining a deeper understanding of the scientific and theoretical foundations of psychiatry. As a university-based program within a large public and private hospital system, UTMB offers residents a strong academic foundation and a diverse patient population. This setting provides broad exposure to the full spectrum of psychiatric conditions and clinical experiences, preparing residents to care for patients across a variety of settings and levels of acuity. Education and continuous improvement are central to our program. Our standing Curriculum Committee includes residents as full members, ensuring that trainee perspectives help shape and strengthen the educational experience. The curriculum is regularly reviewed and updated to meet the evolving needs of our residents and the field of psychiatry. By the completion of the program, residents will have received the comprehensive clinical and educational experiences required for board certification and will be well prepared to pursue their goals as general psychiatrists.
