Benefits of Being University Based
The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston was the first of the health science centers in the University of Texas System. Located on an island in the Gulf of Mexico and a short drive from Houston, the 85 acre main campus includes a complex of hospitals, four academic schools, and numerous research centers and institutes. Approximately 10,000 faculty and staff work at UTMB's main campus and its network of community-based clinics. There are more than 20,000 admissions to UTMB hospitals, 530,000 out patient visits, and over 15,000 emergency room visits annually.
UTMB serves 2400 students and 697 interns, residents, and fellows. Galveston island is also home to Galveston College, a 2 year community college enrolling 2300 students each semester and enrolling 500 students annually in continuing education classes. The island is also home to Texas A&M University at Galveston, which has an annual enrollment of over 1500 students.
