Gayani Silva, MDAssociate Professor
Pediatrics
Dr. Gayani Silva is a Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at UTMB. She is actively involved in resident and medical student education and is a creative and enthusiastic educator who has made a significant contribution to the teaching mission of
the university. She currently holds the positions of Director of Undergraduate Medical Education for the department of Pediatrics, Clerkship Director (Pediatrics), Co-Director, Ambulatory Community Selective (Pediatrics) and the Director for Pediatrics
Preceptorships. She has participated in numerous curriculum development projects for medical student and resident education. Well-versed in many active learning modalities, Dr. Silva has authored a number of problem based cases, OSCE cases, standardized
patient cases and teaching modules on the electronic medical record for student education and testing. Dr. Silva is a facilitator for the UTMB Practice of Medicine courses and Physician Healer Tract. Locally and nationally, she is active with various
organizations: She serves on the Medical Education Committee of the Texas Pediatric Society, and is part of the Faculty Development Committee and the Student Wellness Collaborative of COMSEP.
Dr. Silva currently holds the Dr. C. W. Daeschner, Jr. 45’ Professor of Pediatrics Endowed Professorship, and also the Suzanne Brown Logan Endowed Distinguished Professorship in Teaching Excellence (a two year project driven endowment). In 2008,
Dr. Silva was inducted into the Academy of Master Teachers. In 2009 the UT Board of Regents named her a Distinguished Teaching Professor for making significant contributions to education. In 2005, she was awarded the Pediatric Educator Award for Excellence
in Medical Student Education from the Department of Pediatrics. She was also recognized by the Texas Pediatric Society for her teaching contributions to the Pediatric Preceptorship.
Dr. Silva is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Ambulatory Pediatric Association and the Texas Pediatric Society. She was part of the Bay Area Pediatric Society and served as President in 2007. At UTMB, she is the chair of the Undergraduate
Medical Education Committee and is a member of the course committees for the POM- 3 and the Ambulatory Community Selective. Dr. Silva has been involved in many community based advocacy activities. She is the school consultant for the La Marque and
Dickinson Independent School Districts and served on the Board of Directors of the Coastal Area Health Education Center for a number of years In 2008, Dr. Silva was inducted into the Academy of Master Teachers.
