About Us

The UTMB Academy of Master Teachers was established in 2007 and is an honorary service organization to recognize Master Teachers and to provide an array of faculty development opportunities for all UTMB Faculty, including an annual Faculty Development Day, annual educational symposium, education grand rounds, journal club, innovation grants, mentoring and consultations. Membership is by application and selection against a set of standards. Members serve five-year terms and may be honored with the designation as University of Texas Distinguished Teaching Professors.

The UTMB Academy of Master Teachers recognizes a Master Teacher as an educator who:

  • Sets and reaches clear, realistic and meaningful goals that reflect the needs of the profession, society, learners, and other faculty.
  • Remains prepared to teach effectively and uses innovative ways to overcome challenging issues.
  • Uses appropriate methods to teach or design an educational program, involves others, and designs curriculum consistent with the current literature.
  • Employs evidence-based educational strategies that can serve as a model for others. Goals are outlined, methods are systematic, and results are publishable or published.
  • Formally shares lessons learned or enduring materials with peers at local, regional, national, and international levels.
  • Acts as a peer reviewer for others on educational grants, journals, curricula, or awards.
  • Uses feedback from learners and peers to modify teaching practices, materials, and leadership style.
  • Provides leadership of educational programs, supplying vision and direction while incorporating effective group processes to achieve desired programmatic goals effectively and efficiently.
  • Serves the educational community through active participation in and contribution to local, regional, national, and international educational organizations. A

Accordingly, the application should demonstrate why you are a “Master Teacher.” Demonstrating quantity and quality as an educator requires a) thoughtful analysis, synthesis, and reflection and b) appropriate selection of activities and contributions to demonstrate outcomes and impact.
