How to Apply to the Academy?

Interested Faculty members are encouraged to review What is a Master Teacher? (PDF). Each spring, the Academy publishes an annual call for letters of intent to apply for membership to UTMB faculty. After review of those letters and based on the total number received, faculty are then invited to apply. Application is by submission of an Educator Portfolio, using the required AMT portfolio template.

Application Workshop: required

3 workshops have been scheduled for applicants. It is mandatory for all applicants to attend one of these sessions:

  • June 12, 2018 (8:00 to 9:00 AM) – Rebecca Sealy 3.266
  • June 13, 2018 (12:00 to 1:00 PM) – Rebecca Sealy 3.266
  • June 14, 2018 (4:00 to 5:00 PM) – Rebecca Sealy 3.266

Consultation: required

Each AMT applicant will be assigned to an Application Consultant. It is mandatory to meet with this consultant who can provide personal consultation on portfolio development. These consultants are members of the Academy of Master Teachers who have already presented successful Educator Portfolios and you are encouraged to counsel with them often during the process.

Applications due in the AMT Office:

August 31, 2018, no later than noon

Submit 3 copies of the entire application. Two copies must be in white, 1" to 1.5", 3-ring binders with a clear pocket on the front and spine. Do not use page protectors. The application must include the following, in this order:

  1. A letter of support from your chair or dean (Do not send directly to the AMT. It must be included in your application material.)
  2. Your CV
  3. Educator Portfolio, using required AMT Portfolio Template (Word Document). The AMT has provided Instructions for Completing an Educator Portfolio (PDF) as well to assist you in completing the template.
  4. Supporting documents to the Educator Portfolio

Sample Portfolios for Review

Please refer to these portfolios for assistance. They represent both clinical and research faculty in all four schools. Before completing your own, it is strongly recommended that you examine some of the sample portfolios provided on the Educator Portfolio webpage. These samples have all been scored against the criteria for membership in the UTMB AMT, and each has been found to meet the criteria for selection into the Academy. Please note that these sample portfolios do not include the supporting documents which must accompany a portfolio (e.g. samples of work, or attached evidence of quality).

In addition to samples from your own school, we urge you to also review those from other schools to get ideas about how to document your work. If you are interested in seeing more examples, please contact the AMT Office about reviewing actual and successful portfolios of some of the AMT members or contact your consultant for assistance.
