Dr. Lea received her BSN from Houston Baptist University in 1973. She received her Master's in Education with a focus in Health Education from Baylor University in 1996. In 2014, she received her DNP in Executive Leadership from American Sentinel University in Aurora, Colorado.
Dr. Lea’s area of research interest is in depression and heart failure. She has published articles on depression and heart failure in peer reviewed journals. She currently teaches in the Undergraduate Baccalaureate Program with expertise in adult critical care nursing and leadership.
Dr. Lea is currently the Undergraduate Program Director for Senior Level and RN-BSN students. She is also the Faculty Liaison to the UTMB Nurse Residency Program. Dr. Lea currently serves on the Institutional Effectiveness Committee.
Other accomplishments include: Alice Caroline Brown Research Award for Nursing 2014, Eisenhauer Biegert Faculty Award for Innovation and Humanism in Nursing 2014, Excellence in Nursing Awards for Good Samaritan Foundation as the BRONZE MEDALIST in Nursing Education: Faculty 2014 and 2017 Award of Excellence in Education from Sigma Theta Tau Alpha Delta Chapter, 2010. She recently returned from London, United Kingdom after presenting a poster entitled “The Use of Depression Screening in Heart Failure Patients: Nurses’ Knowledge and Beliefs” at the 2nd International Conference on Nursing Science and Practice.
Dr. Lea is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International and Alpha Delta Nursing Honor Society, National League of Nursing, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
