Lynne Hughes, PhD, PT, OCS, MTCAssociate Professor

Dr. Hughes is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) with a BS in Physical Therapy. She obtained her MS in Orthopedic PT from Texas Woman’s University and her PhD in Health Promotion and Wellness from Rocky Mountain University
of Health Professions. Dr. Hughes practiced clinically for 16 years at Scott & White and served as a clinical instructor for 15 years. She previously served as an adjunct instructor at McLennan Community College in the Physical Therapist Assistant
Program, as an Assistant Clinical Professor at Angelo State University, and as an Assistant/Associate Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word in the Physical Therapy programs. Her primary areas of teaching have been in orthopedics, manual
therapy, and physical agents.
Dr. Hughes joined the faculty in the Department of Physical Therapy in 2014 and currently holds the rank of Associate Professor. Her primary appointment is in the PTA to DPT Bridge program teaching the orthopedic series of courses. She also teaches in
the areas of physical agents, movement science, and anatomy. Dr. Hughes is the Bridge program director and the chair of the admissions committee. She also holds a faculty appointment in the Center for Recovery, Physical Activity, and Nutrition and
was named the Core Lab Director in January 2019. She is the principal investigator leading a research team in investigating the effects of manual therapy on posture. This project was initiated with a Pepper Pilot grant. Her research involves both
quantitative and qualitative components. She has mentored 1 post-doctoral student and 11 graduate students (PT, OT, and MSHP) in independent study to conduct research which has resulted in 2 publications and 12 posters that the student was the first
author. Dr. Hughes has 6 peer-reviewed publications and 32 state and national poster or platform research presentations. She is the current recipient of the Barbara Barton Professorship.
Dr. Hughes has served on the UTMB Faculty Senate since 2014 and holds the position of immediate past chair for the 2019-20 academic year. Dr. Hughes is an active member of the Texas Physical Therapy Association and American Physical Therapy Association.
She was the recipient of the Jeannette Winfree Award for her service to TPTA and a Fellow of the Tom Waugh Leadership Development Program. She is a life member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.
Dr. Hughes was inducted into the Academy of Master Teachers in 2019.
