Dr. Suzanne E. Alton is an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing (SON) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota with a BA in Psychology in 1983, achieving Phi Beta Kappa membership among other honors. In 1987, Dr. Alton received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the Montana State University School of Nursing and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau International, an invited nursing honor society. Her educational background includes a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, California as a Family Nurse Practitioner, earned in 1997, and she is Board Certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).Dr. Alton received her Doctor in Nursing Practice (DNP) from the University of Alabama in 2013.

Dr. Alton’s educational activities at UTMB include teaching within the MSN Family Nurse Practitioner track and creating the BSN Pharmacology course. She is an active member of several SON committees and has served as a taskforce leader for several ad-hoc committees. Her teaching career began in 1983 when she completed intensive Peace Corps training in culturally relevant teaching and taught English as a Foreign Language in Gabon, Africa for two years with minimal resources. Dr. Alton’s goal for clinical education is to combine evidence-based best practices with compassionate holistic care. She is Board Certified as an Advanced Practice Holistic Nurse. Dr. Alton has presented podium and poster presentations at the national conferences of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Dr. Alton is among the few professionals recently selected for the inaugural 2014 AANP Future Leaders Program. In 2014 she was selected as the SON candidate for the Josiah Macy Junior Education Scholarship. Dr. Alton received the Faculty Achievement Award in the Spring of 2014 and has been chosen to write items for the AANP National Certification Exam. Dr. Alton served as the Chair of the Faculty Senate for the FY17.
