Center for Health Promotion, Performance, and Rehabilitation Research (CHPPRR) supports a collaborative community of scientists and clinicians at UTMB dedicated to the advancement of health promotion, performance, and rehabilitation research.

The Center is committed to creating relationships among basic, clinical, and translational scientists to apply research findings for the benefit of persons with disability, health inequities, and chronic disease across the lifespan and their families, caregivers, and communities.

CHPPRR was established in 2022 to meet the growing need of the UTMB research community in health promotion, performance, and rehabilitation research. Our core research areas are Health Across the Lifespan, Learning Health Systems & Health Services Research, Patient-Centered Health & Community Outcomes, Health Promotion, and Neuromotor Control & Performance.

Richard Lieber, PhD presented on enhancing collaborations between researchers and clinicians in a CHPPRR Lecture Series event titled Enhancing Researcher-Clinician Collaborations in Rehabilitation Medicine – Experiences from the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab on January 19, 2023 at 12:00 noon in room 3.200 in the Health Education Center.

CHPPRR Leadership attended UTMB’s Research Day on May 4, 2023. Missy Morrow, PhD and Judi Linton, MS, PT met with attendees during the Cores and Centers exhibit to showcase the opportunities and resources the center has to offer.

CHPPRR researchers, faculty, and residents received training on the use of the center’s new Biodex System 4 Dynamometer in April. The addition of this resource to CHPPRR will allow researchers to evaluate strength, endurance, power and range of motion of all major joints and muscles and collect highly detailed objective data.

Biography: Richard L. Lieber, PhD, oversees all research endeavors throughout the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab system of care. Dr. Lieber is the established expert in the field, both nationally and internationally, and is a pioneer in conducting translational research. Dr. Lieber, along with Chief Medical Officer James Sliwa, DO, is jointly responsible for implementing the novel translational approach embedded in the Shirley Ryan AbilityLab medical and research enterprise, and for demonstrating its tangible and cultural progress. As Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Lieber oversees the work of more than 200 researchers. Under his leadership, Shirley Ryan AbilityLab has more than 300 research studies and clinical trials under way, all of which will benefit its patient population.
