Through a partnership with the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Mature Driver Program, the Department of Occupational Therapy is instilling essential skills for its graduates to support older adult patients.
Following training experiences in the classroom and the community, second-year OT students are now "CarFit" certified to help older adults drive safely and comfortably.
The national CarFit program was developed in 2006 jointly between AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). UTMB students completed this training as part of their OT and Geriatrics course, applying their skills and knowledge to help older adults find a better fit in their vehicles to promote comfort, safety, and confidence behind the wheel. Thanks to OT faculty member Amy Boyd, OTD, OTR, for her leadership with this initiative.
