Who Fixes Broken Systems?
Racism and the Fight for Health Equity
There is growing attention to racism as a social determinant of health because it directly
causes disease, injury and death. Social determinants of health can also impact health
indirectly by controlling access to resources that matter for health, and by shaping whether
and how people access health care. What role can the discipline and practice of public
health play in eliminating racism? Is there room for individual action in the fight for broad
structural change?
